The Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen were pleased to be asked to partner with Made by Hand at their first ever show in Cheltenham this March. As part of the partnership we chose to give an award ‘The Maker’s Mark’ award, earmarked for a maker with a distinctive voice who could handle materials and techniques with respect and confidence, to one of the exhibitors.
As the outgoing chairman of the Guild I was excited to be asked to make the selection but somewhat overawed by the range of talent in the show until I chose ‘Jackie Makes Clogs’. What interested me about Jackie Leggett was that she comes from a tradition of clog making – her great grandfather used to make clogs in Maryport in Cumbria – but she has developed this traditional craft to make footwear with a really contemporary feel while still keeping the same care and respect for materials and techniques. Her stand was a blaze of colour, she was fizzing with enthusiasm and when you looked closely at her work each process was completed with the utmost care to a very high standard. Jackie has already had recognition in the world of both fashion and craft and we are looking forward to showing her work in ‘The Guild at 51’ in 2019.
