James Campbell 1942 - 2019

I was very saddened to hear of the recent death of James Campbell.

He was a true example of a polymath. His interests ranged from jazz to poetry and his skill and draughtsmanship enabled him to translate his love and experience of the wilder landscapes of Scotland or Pembrokeshire into his drawings and on to his ceramics.

Always an enthusiastic embracer of new ideas and a sharp wit, he nonetheless had time to listen to nascent potters who might encounter problems with their work or technical difficulties. The wealth and diversity of his experience enabled him to come up with possible solutions every time. He was the solver of several of my own knotty problems with firing and for this I will always be grateful to him.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to collect several pieces of his work, which I cherish and they will continue to remind me of a fine, kind man.
