Simon Sharp - Our New Guest Maker
Simon Sharp is a studio potter. Having studied at Grimsby School of Art and Harrow College, Simon has earnt his living working with clay for over 45 years.
Shape and form are important to his work, and Simon explores all the possibilities of a vessel before settling on one form. The work is hand thrown or press moulded to create a broad range of shapes and functions. He throws and turns high-fired white earthenware using the blank forms as canvases to paint on. The work is fired to 1168 degrees centigrade and finished with a clear glaze.

Simon refers to himself as a painter in clay and is particularly interested in the art of Antionio Tapies, Paul Klee, and Picasso’s line drawings. Simon decorates his work using Japanese brushes, cut paper resist and sgraffito in coloured slips creating work which is abstract and geometric, in colour or monochrome and in a variety of designs.
Simon is a member of the Makers Guild of Wales and the Suffolk Craft Society and lives and works in Essex.
You can see more of Simon Sharp's work in our Cheltenham shop during March.
