Annie Hewett

I am a relative newcomer to the world of ceramics, having started making pots in 2001 after a varied career within the arts.

I began my art training at St. Martins at the end of the sixties, studying graphics. This was followed by several years teaching in secondary schools, subsequently at Stroud College where I was a tutor for painting and drawing and calligraphy, as well as working with a variety of freelance design projects, both public and private.

The change of focus towards working with clay happened almost by accident. I decided to take myself off on a throwing course so that I would be able to help my younger son with his GCSE ceramics.

I had always been interested in the subject but had never pursued it. I became completely absorbed and the rest, as they say, is history.

I have been strongly influenced by the illustrative qualities of artists such as Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Stanley Spencer and John Minton as well as textile designers such as Lucienne Day.
