Tin Can Flowers
Margie Hoffnung and Sarah Corston of the Frog Lane Flower Farm will be showing their locally grown flowers, demonstrating how they create beautiful arrangements and engaging in conversations about sustainability, seasonality and easy recycling. The tin can flower arrangements will be for sale.
The ethos of Frog Lane Flower Farm is to have as light a carbon footprint as possible. We try to avoid using packaging wherever possible but of course there are going to be times when you need a vase to give friends posies of flowers or to transport them.
Most people can rustle up a glass vase or favourite old jug, but as a small business, we do not have an endless supply to give away, nor do we want to order in new vases all the time. Added to that, glass/pottery is fragile and can be quite heavy.
We decided instead to use tin cans, which are light, unbreakable and in plentiful supply. They are the perfect size for a posy and can then be recycled by the recipient. We soak off the labels and of course only use ones which do not have sharp edges. For a slightly ‘smarter’ occasion we wrap the tins with hessian and fasten it with a bit of undyed raffia. It’s a practical solution which works for us.
There may be an opportunity to make a textile vase in a drop-in workshop in the demonstration tent close by, the idea being that the tin can arrangement will slot into a handmade vase.
