Jelena Dietrich

I create translucent porcelain pieces that sit between art and everyday use, with a particular focus on lighting. I began my ceramics education in Vienna, Austria, where I completed a three-year diploma in Ceramics and Product Design. During that time, I developed skills in mould making and slip casting in porcelain. After graduating from a second degree in Painting, I moved to Bath to pursue a master’s degree in Fine Art (Ceramics), where I now have my studio.

In my work, I aim to balance simple, timeless design with a sense of playfulness. By keeping colours soft and minimal, the natural qualities of the porcelain can stand out. I decorate my pieces with small cut-outs filled with glaze, inspired by Chinese Linglong porcelain, alongside delicate imprinted edges and textures. These details give each piece a light, organic, almost living feel.

Most of my work is created through slip casting, a technique often used in large-scale ceramic production. I deliberately guide my practice away from the perfection and symmetry this process typically produces, allowing space for movement and variation in the material. Through this approach, each piece holds a quiet individuality, shaped as much by the material and process as by my hand.
