Copperplate Calligraphy is sometimes called, 'The Art of the Oval.' It is a script dating from the copperplate engraving and printing process of the early 1700's. It takes many hours of practice and years to learn and these days it is a beauty almost lost to The UK.
I am interested in the heritage of this beautiful script and over time have trained my hand to its discipline, complexity and elegance, so that there is a very real sense of walking in historical footsteps. Currently, my favourite learning resource is a collection of reference engravings collected by George Bickham in the 1720's.
When working on commissioned pieces, I enjoy the close collaboration and project shaping with clients. Each piece is unique and there is something very special about being the invisible hand that gives form to others' words.
I tend to use vintage nibs, traditional penholders and handmade paints or inks, sourced from calligraphy contacts around the world.
