New Works by Cate Fox Now Available

Cate Fox is a textile artist whose work offers a modern interpretation of the traditional sampler style, blending heritage techniques with her own fresh style.

Cate has two new framed pieces available for sale in our Montpellier shop. They feature intricate stitching and contemporary patterns that reflect Cate's innovative approach to traditional textile art, making them a lovely addition to your home. We asked Cate to tell us a little about them.

‘The little church picture (on the left above) is very loosely based on the church on The Island in St Ives. It is hand embroidery with painted fabric and wire and is entitled ‘Sea Pinks on the Island.’

The second picture is a mixed collection of hand embroidery with found and saved pieces on a wire frame. Entitled ‘Give Me Your Green Beads’, it is in part inspired by a poem I have always liked ‘Overheard on a Saltmarsh’ by Harold Monro. There is a line in the poem about wanting something so much the little goblin is willing to 'Lie in the mud and howl for them'. That speaks to me.’

We thought we'd share the whole of Harold Monro's poem with you.

Overheard On a Saltmarsh (1917)
Nymph, nymph, what are your beads?
Green glass, goblin. Why do you stare at them?
Give them me.
No.
Give them me. Give them me.
No.
Then I will howl all night in the reeds,
Lie in the mud and howl for them.

Goblin, why do you love them so?

They are better than stars or water,
Better than voices of winds that sing,
Better than any man's fair daughter,
Your green glass beads on a silver ring.

Hush I stole them out of the moon.

Give me your beads. I desire them.
No.
I will howl in a deep lagoon
